England vs Australia - preview - International friendly

Australia are playing their first game at the new Wembley against England tonight in a friendly in front of a sell out audience.

This is the sides first encounter since 2016, which saw England prevail over the Australians 1-0.

This friendly may give a good opportunity for Southgate to rotate the squad and use players who are not regulars to international football, such as Lewis Dunk and Eddie Nketiah, especially in the absence of some regular players such as Bukayo Saka.

Aaron Ramsdales last appearance was for England, having been dropped by Arsenal. This will now give Southgate a debate over if to use the 25-year-old, having had limited club minutes.

This adds to the further debate around Southgate’s team selection, with the manager coming under a lot of criticism for using Jordan Henderson after his Saudi Pro League, and Harry Maguire after his poor club performances and very limited minutes.

Six years after his four year stint managing the Socceroos, Ange Postecoglou is still proving to be a strong presence in the dressing room, with Australia manager Graham Arnold saying that he will attempt to inspire his men using Ange.

The fixture will kick off at 19:45 with coverage on Channel 4.
