Mo Salah has now surpassed Thierry Henrys all time assists total, whilst only being 10 goals away from matching the Frenchman’s total goal tally in the premier league. It is worth saying it has taken Mo Sabah 16 more games to achieve this. But now a question has to be asked.
Is Mo Salah now in the conversation of being the greatest player to ever grace the English game?
It is broadly known that Sarah’s start to premier league life was not easy, debuting under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in the 2013/14 season. In his 10 appearances that season, he made six starts scoring 2 goals and notching a singular assist.
His second season in 2014-2015 was worse. Salah featured three times, all three coming as a substitute, amassing a total of 0 goals and 0 assists. This marked his final season at Chelsea. Mourhinos Chelsea reputation of letting future superstars go was about to strengthen.
After two years spent in Serie A, Salah returned to the Premier League after being bought for £36.9 million, at the time a club record, and hence attracted many pundits not believing the Egyptian would live up to the price tag.
Jurgen Klopp had his man, Salah was back in England. His stretch for Roma was impressive but he had yet to prove it in England yet.
And it didn’t take long.
Salah scored in his first game back in England, a 3-3 draw at home to Watford. His new adoring fans in Anfield got a glimpse of what was to come. By the end of his first month back in England he had matched his all time G/A record at Chelsea. In just under 200 minutes.
Since joining Liverpool, his worst return has been a 27 G/A season in 2020/21. In his first season back, he scored 32 goals and notched 10 assists.
Ignoring 2023/24, Salah has outperformed his xG+xA every single season. Not only has his personal stats been incredible, but so has his success. Salah helped Liverpool reach three EFL cup finals, two second place Premier League finishes, an FA Cup Final and two Champions League finals.
Salah has won everything there is to win with Liverpool, two EFL Cups, an FA Cup, a Champions League and that all elusive Premier League title in 2019/20. In Liverpools title winning season, Salah scored 19 goals and 10 assists in 33 starts.
Salah is also coveted in awards, winning three Golden Boots (in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2021/22), PL Player of the Season (2017/18), five Player of the Months, and two PFA Player of the Year awards (2018 and 2022).
But Salahs true brilliance is his ability to perform for Liverpool whenever he is called upon.
Salah’s stats and accomplishments qualifies him for this conversation of the greatest player of all time in the Premier League.
He is still playing, and with his contract expiring in the summer, it is too soon to determine his status. But one thing is clear, when he finally hangs up his boots, we will have to have this conversation.
