Wrexhams start to life in the Championship has been anything but Hollywood so far, having now lost both opening games of the campaign, with a 3-2 defeat to West Brom at the SToK Racecourse.
West Brom took the lead for the second time in the 74’ after Wrexhams back four compressed and no one stayed wide, allowing Jed Wallace space to receive the ball and score after Mikey Johnston knocked the long ball down.
The pair had only been on the pitch for a minute before linking up to put their side into the lead, personifying the phrase ‘super subs’ and repaying Ryan Masons faith in bringing them on instantly.
The result was wrapped up in the 81’ when Wrexhams confused defending allowed mutliple chances for West Brom to score, with a drilled cross into the box pealing out for Johnston to get another assist, as his floated cross was converted by Price who was left uncontested having exploited the space between the two centre halves.
Wrexhams best period of the game came with five minutes left of the first half, as McClean forced a good save, and first save, out of goalkeeper Griffiths at his near post. The following corner providing another excellent chance for the Welsh side, who headed the chance over the bar.
This built the momentum for Lewis O’Brien to level the score at 42’, Moore crossed the ball into the box from the right hand-side, with skipper James McClean bringing the ball down for O’Brien to rifle the ball into the net, levelling the score just before half time.
Isaac Price opened the scoring in the 20’, with cut the ball back for the 21 year old midfielder, who joined the magpies in the summer for €3 million.
In the dying moments Sam Smith scoring a diving header in the 94’ after Longman’s crossed was missed by the centre half and striker. Smith followed up his goal with an instant booking for a tussle in the midfield.
